The
Jefferson Parish Public School System will hold a dedication and unveiling
ceremony for its new Terrytown Elementary School on February 10.
The
75,000 square-foot state-of-the art elementary school has been under
construction since March 2010. Immediately
following the dedication ceremony, tours of the new building will be
provided.
The
striking design of the new school conveys the strength of Terrytown’s rebound
following Hurricane Katrina on the outside with unique dynamics in the
interior. The building can support the growing Terrytown community.
Located near the TerrytownPlayground,
the two-story school consists of a large atrium that serves as a focal point of
the building.
The new school was funded in part by
a $22.7 million obligation from FEMA and insurance proceeds. The funds allowed the school system to make a
complete replacement of the school, as well as new work necessary to
comply with codes and standards upgrades.
Since Katrina-related damages at
Terrytown Elementary School’s campus surpassed a 50 percent damage threshold,
FEMA previously determined the school was eligible for replacement funding. The
federal agency also approved the school system’s improved project request, enabling
the addition of a physical education facility at the new school.
FEMA has provided the JPPSS with
more than $118 million in public assistance funding to date for
recovery work related to hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Construction
of the new Terrytown Elementary School was completed in August 2011.
