Transfer Request Forms for 2012-2013 Now Available

All Transfer Request forms for the 2012-2013 school year are now available on the Jefferson Parish Public School System’s website or at the system’s Office of Community Engagement (formerly Compliance Office) located at 1901 Manhattan Blvd., Suite A-201, Harvey, LA 70058.

Parents/legal guardians who would like to request a transfer for their child to attend a different Jefferson Parish Public School outside their district attendance zone may now download the Transfer Request forms from the system’s website at www.jppss.k12.la.us or pick up the forms from the Office of Community Engagement (“OCE”).  Transfer Request forms will be available at the OCE Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

The criteria for submitting each form is indicated on the respective form.

System Opens Magnet School Admissions & Transfers for 2012-13 School Year

The Jefferson Parish Public School System will begin accepting applications and transfers to its 2012 – 2013 magnet school program beginning on May 11 and will close on July 10.

The Jefferson Parish Public School System offers four major magnet programs in:  Montessori, Art Integration, International Baccalaureate, and Foreign Language Immersion.

Parents of students who would like to attend any one of the 13 schools in the magnet program can obtain a Magnet School/Program application and transfer form from several sources; including: the JPPSS website, www.jppss.k12.la.us, each magnet school’s website, the Office of Community Engagement (formerly Compliance Office), 1901 Manhattan Blvd., Suite A-201, Harvey, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., or at the magnet school site between the hours of 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.

            Parents must complete an application form and a transfer form and hand deliver to the principal of the requested magnet school by June 8  OR hand deliver both forms to the Office of Community Engagement before 4:00 p.m. on June 11.  NOTE:  All school offices will be closed from June 13 to July 13.  The final deadline to submit an application is prior to 4:00 p.m. on July 10 at the Office of Community Engagement.

School System Announces Summer School Schedule

The Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS) will offer Summer School for credit recovery, removal of deficiencies, or new credit for students presently enrolled in grades 8-12. All course work will be online learning using PLATO Learning System. For questions concerning PLATO, please call your child’s school counselor during school hours. Students enrolled in grades 4-7 may attend and take subjects at a state accredited Summer School site as per Bulletin 741. Jefferson Parish Public School System does not offer Summer School for grades 4-7.

Students must be in assigned classroom or designated, supervised areas on campus.

Students must follow the behavioral expectations according to 2011-2012 Procedures and Policies for Parents and Students.

Summer School Hotline phone number is 349-8529 and will be available after April 3, 2012. Please leave your name, contact number and a brief message. Your call will be returned in a timely manner.

There will be two semesters for Summer School, 2012. Students must complete course requirements (content and hours, if needed) for A or B in one course within 15 days before registering for another course. For example

 

• a student needs to successfully complete Biology B and Geometry A

            register for and complete Biology B within 15 days

then register for Geometry A for the final 15 days

 

• a student needs to successfully complete Algebra I A and B

register for and complete Algebra I A within 15 days

then register for Algebra I B within 15 days

 

 

• a student needing more than a new or repeat unit of credit is advised to carefully consider

there are only 30 days for summer school

should review the recommended online learning hours prior to registering

 

• a student in the eighth grade needing repeat courses and LEAP remediation is advised to carefully consider

one course must be completed within the first 15 days (June 5-25)

another course must be completed within 15 days (June 28-July 19)

LEAP remediation will be from June 4-22 and testing is June 25-29.

 

• a student in the eighth grade needing 1 repeat course and LEAP is advised to carefully consider

focusing on LEAP remediation, June.

Register for 1 repeat course (June 27) and begin course remediation June 28-July 19.

• The cost per semester is $210.00 for residents of Jefferson Parish and is due at registration.

• Cost per semester is $310.00 for non residents and is due at registration.

• Payment may be made via cash or money order made payable to Jefferson Parish Public School System. Full payment for all students is due at registration.

• Students must provide their own transportation, ear phones, notebook, pens and pencils for each course. Registration begins at 8 AM at each site.

• Students must have the following documentation before being allowed to register:

 

 Summer School permission form signed by the counselor (Revised 2/2012)

 A copy of the final report card, 2011-2012 school year

 Proof of residence, such as a current utility bill, driver’s license and so forth.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration Information

Registration for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes will begin on the same date as registration for all other grade levels, July 23, 2012. Our district is facing serious budget challenges and intends to submit the 2012/13 budget to the School Board for approval at its meeting on June 6, 2012. After the budget is approved, district personnel will know exactly how many pre-k classes can be offered and can provide the public accurate information before registration begins. This website will contain such information shortly after June 6th regarding the various locations throughout the district where pre-k registration will be held beginning July 23rd. Each elementary school will also have such information.

Safe and Supportive Schools High School Parent Survey

     

Several high schools in our district are participating in a Safe and Supportive Schools Initiative Survey through the Louisiana State Department of Education.  The survey will allow schools to measure conditions for learning to improve your child’s high school’s environment. 

The results of this survey will allow us to develop and implement programs that will: 

  

  • Address suspensions and expulsions related to substance use and violence 
  • Reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs 
  • Improve academic achievement 
  • Increase student safety 
  • Increase graduation rates 
  • Reduce dropout rates 
  • Reduce at risk social behaviors  
  • Provide a continuum of mental health services to serve youth and families 
  • Provide services to enhance pro-social skills for youth and families

Statewide Testing for Nonpublic and Home School Students

The Jefferson Parish Public School System is accepting registrations from February 6 to March 9, 2012 for nonpublic and home study students who are eligible to take LEAP, GEE, or iLEAP .

Nonpublic school students are eligible to take

  • 4th and 8th grade LEAP test in English Language Arts and Math.

Home Study students are eligible to take

  • English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies LEAP tests for 4th and 8th grade
  • English Language Arts and Math GEE tests for 10th grade
  • Science and Social Studies GEE tests for 11th grade
  • English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies iLEAP tests for 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th grades
  • Reading, Language, and Mathematics Iowa Survey for 2nd grade

Students entering 5th and 9th grades and plan to enroll in a Jefferson Parish Public School System for the 2012 – 2013 school year MUST take and pass the LEAP test.

The parent or guardian must provide the following items:

  • Copy of the student’s birth certificate
  • Copy of the student’s social security card
  • Copy of the home school approval letter
  • Copy of the most recent nonpublic school report card
  • Copy of the student’s id (if available).
  • $35.00 fee

The parent or guardian needs to register their student at the school where the student would attend if they were not in a nonpublic school or home schooled.
